Paul Tuller

Paul Tuller is a queer illustrator living in NYC. He specializes in editorial illustration and works frequently with The Wall Street Journal, Billboard, and does costume illustration for film and television.

Paul is one of my absolute favorite people to spend time with when I visit New York. His smile and gaze are endearingly, earnestly sweet. Paul: I adore you. Thanks for making the time for this and for sharing your thoughts with our community.

What are your pronouns?

Tell us about yourself.

I'm an illustrator based in Brooklyn who also does costume illustration for film and television. I bike everywhere. I'm inspired by queer culture, naked bodies, and retro comic books.

One of the things I love about you, Paul, is the way you activate on important issues—how you use your voice and talents to raise awareness for our community. How do you stay energized and activated?

I have a global LGBTQ+ news alert on Google because queer issues don't always make the headlines. I've done some merch to raise money for Chechnya and Brazil in the past and this month I donated some queer figure drawings for a gallery opening benefitting the Point Foundation in NYC.

Who are your favorite artists?

I have a new one every week, but I just saw the Amy Sherald show in Chelsea and walked away super inspired.

What is the last song you listened to?

Lana Del Rey, California. It gives me chills.

What does scent mean to you?

I think of scent in relation to imagery and memories. Mood.

What is your favorite Sigil perfume?

Prima Materia. It smells like an enchanted forest. Remember that scene in Snow White when the birds follow her around? She was wearing Prima Materia.

What are you most excited about for the rest of the year?

I'm pretty excited to be illustrating some spiked seltzer cans for a queer owned company.

What is your current daily wellbeing practice?

Washing my face and applying SPF—even in the depths of NYC winter.
